It is a big weekend for fans of Marvel comics this weekend. Already the pre-sales for one of the movies opening this weekend is setting records, so this is likely to be a huge weekend at the local multi-plex. Also opening this weekend is a biopic about one of the most influential musicians of the late 20th century. The good news is that both of the big films opening this weekend are getting great reviews.
Here are the films opening in theaters August 1, 2014:
Guardians of the Galaxy - Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper. One of the more obscure Marvel universe superhero teams makes it to the big screen this weekend. A group of misfits, one an earthling, the rest of them aliens and genetically altered animals, come together to stop an intergalactic threat to the entire universe in the form of Ronan the Accuser. The reviews for this one have been very good with over 90% of critics saying this is a must-see. It has lots of humor, doesn't take itself too seriously, has been called a Space-Western, and is a lot of fun. Pre-sales for tickets have already reached record levels on this one, so this might be the one to see. Rated PG-13.
Get On Up - Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, Dan Aykroyd. He was known as the Godfather of Soul, but James Brown influenced rock and roll, as well. In fact he was a huge influence on modern singers with his ability to sing and dance, his performances electrifying audiences. This biopic shows Brown's early days in poverty and how he discovered his talents and love of music could raise him out of his troubled beginnings to become a legend. Critics are saying that Chadwick Boseman's performance as Brown is excellent and that this is one biopic who manages to get it right. Rated PG-13.
