A lot of people will be celebrating Valentine’s Day over the weekend, since Cupid’s holiday falls on a workday this year. If you are looking for something to do, to either celebrate or get away from the celebration, then music is your best bet. Dancing with someone or finding someone to dance with can be done easily this Saturday at Variety Playhouse. Galactic is going to funk up Atlanta.

Just a month into the year, 2010 is coming up roses for the New Orleans group Galactic. On February 9, the band released their new album Ya-Ka-May, a visionary mix, intertwining jazz, brass band, R&B, and funk. The album features all-new material generated by the band comprised of drummer Stanton Moore, bassist Robert Mercurio, saxophonist/harmonica player Ben Ellman, keyboardist Richard Vogel and guitarist Jeff Raines.

Galactic’s winter tour will rely heavily on the new songs but fans can still hear their favorites. Right now you can vote on which Galactic songs or cover songs you want them to play. Click here to cast your vote. Among the choices are “Crosstown Traffic” by Jimi Hendrix Experience, “Move on Up” by Curtis Mayfield and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” by Michael Jackson.

On February 12, Galactic comes to Atlanta along with special guest Corey Glover (Living Colour) and Corey Henry (Rebirth Brass Band). Tickets are $22.50 in advance or $25 the day of the show. Galactic tickets can be purchased through the Variety Playhouse ticket club.
