Shands at the University of Florida Weight Loss Surgery Center offers Bariatric Surgery for the morbidly obese. They state over 15 million people are morbidly obese. Being morbidly obese means being over 100 pounds overweight or having a body mass index over 40 percent.
Being obese causes an earlier death, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and many other medical problems.
Shands offers two types of surgery. The first is the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, which is more invasive invasive but offers a greater weight loss. The second is the Lap Band and offers fewer complications and is less invasive.
The Roux-ex-Y actually surgically reduces your stomach size and bypasses your small intestines. This is considered major surgery. The Lap Band simply makes a small stomach pouch by going over the top of the exphogus but doesn't bypass your small intestine. The Band is adjustable so if there are problems the surgeon can laproscopically readjust or remove the band.
If you have tried many different diets and failed at keeping the weight off, one of the options may be right for you. Both of these surgeries require a commitment to follow through and a change in dietary habits to keep the weight off once your goal is obtained. Remember, you are making a commitment to your long term health.
