Gai Scott allegedly pulled the trigger on Benzino as they were traveling in a funeral procession. According to TMZ, March 31, 2014, police charged Benzino’s nephew, Gai Scott, with assault with intent to murder.

Gai, 36, appeared in court today. His reason for shooting at his uncle, Benzino, was because he was acting in self-defense.

Benzino, 48, from the VH1 TV reality show "Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta" was shot while driving in a funeral procession for his mother. The Plymouth County District Attorney’s office issued a statement with the details of the shooting. Just before noon, the funeral procession traveled south of Boston on Route 3. Benzino drove a red SUV, while Gai was in a Bentley. The Bentley pulled up beside the SUV and Gai fired off several shots. The DA also reports that there has been a growing family tension between the two men.

According to a taped conversation between TMZ and Benzino, he remembers at least seven or eight shots fired at him. He also claims that he and his nephew haven’t talked to each other for 5, 6 or 7 years

Benzino said that does not know why his nephew wanted to shoot him. He sustained a bullet wound in the arm and another bullet grazed his back. He was taken to the Duxbury Police Department and then transferred to the hospital. Reports from the South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth, reported Benzino is in good condition.

Police reports say that they found several bullet holes in Benzino's SUV and they discovered what they believed to be blood inside the vehicle. There were shell casings and projectiles found at the scene.

Benzino is the CEO of Hip-Hop Weekly. Formerly he owned The Source magazine.
