With bated breath, craft beer drinkers in Columbus have been waiting for the sun to shine, the temperatures to rise and the clouds to part so we can raise our pints in mirth under the roof of blue skies. Now if that sentence doesn't get you excited for craft beer festival season, I don't know what will.
Indeed, we have found ourselves upon the precipice of another spring and summer filled with a myriad of festivals that will allow the microbrew novice to discover a reason to ditch Miller Lite and craft brew connoisseurs to catch up with old friends and old hoppy favorites. With the ever-expanding craft beer culture in Columbus turning out new brews, this festival season promises to be a good one.
Just a few weeks away on May 24th at 7:30 p.m., we have Gahanna Craft Draft Brewfest at Creekside Park. If you haven't visited Creekside Park, this is a perfect time to do so and even better with a tasty brew in hand. General admission will cost you $45, which includes 25 samples and an 8 oz. souvenir glass mug to proudly place in your kitchen cabinet. There is also a VIP package available for $65 which will get you into the event an hour earlier, food from Creekside Local Cantina, a souvenir koozie to keep your bottles chilly during the hot summer nights and an invite to a beer tasting tutorial. What's on tap, you ask? Glad you asked. Attendees will be able to taste the sweet nectar of some of Columbus' finest breweries, incluing:
- Zauber Brewing Co.
- Seventh Son
- Actual Brewing
- Homestead Beer Co.
- Four String Brewing Co.
- Buckeye Lake Brewery
- Hoof Hearted
- Wolf's Ridge Brewing
- Rockmill Brewery
- Elevator Brewing Company and
- Catawba Island Brewing Co.
Keep in mind that some of these breweries have released new brews, so you'll want to make sure you have a ticket to this kick-off event! For a limited time, General Admission tickets are $10 off and VIP tickets are $20 off. Click here for details.
Not long after, we'll have Barley's Smokehouse and Brewpub's Mini Real Ale Festival scheduled for June 7th and the World Beer Festival in Cleveland taking place on June 14th. Details on those festivals soon to come.
In the meantime, we can always look north for another good beer festival, albeit not a local one. The 17th Annual Summer Beer Festival will take place on July 25th and 26th in Riverside Park in Ypsilanti, Michigan. As Ohioans, this is the one time when we can put our beef with the state "Up North" aside and join them in celebrating good beer. If you have not partaken of this festival before, I highly recommend the three-hours-and-change drive. The Michigan Summer Beer Festival offers more than 800 different beer selections from some of our favorite breweries, including Founders, Bell's, Shorts, Arcadia, Dark Horse, Original Gravity and many, many, many more.
Tickets go on sale May 1st at 10 a.m. For $35 you can enjoy a Friday evening from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., sampling 15 different types of beers. Think 15 beer samples aren't enough? No problem. Additional tokens are available for purchase. If you're more of a Saturday drinker, tickets are $40 and the event begins at 1 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. If this sounds like an ideal event, get your ticket ASAP as they typically sell out quickly.
If you can't make it to any of these events, no worries. Columbus will have plenty more opportunities for you to pay homage to Hopsus (what's up Nathan and Jennie) and enjoy some truly remarkable beers all produced locally.
Hope to see you all out there this summer! Cheers!
