On January the 8th of last year (2011), U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords held a public hall meeting in a grocery store parking lot in Casas Adobes, near Tucson, Arizona. It was at this meeting that Jared Lee Loughner presented a pistol and opened fire on the crowd. Representative Giffords (Democrat) and eighteen others where shot.
Today, January 22nd, 2012 Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has announced that she will step down from congress. The congresswoman served the state of Arizona for many years and was a beacon of hope for many people in her courageous recovery. At the time of the attack her husband and daughter were in Houston and flew home immediately to find that the then congresswoman had been put into an induced coma. After months of work the congresswoman recovered extremely well but has decided to no longer take a place in official politics.
I say official politics because as sad as it sounds no body knew about the little Democrat from Arizona before the shooting. Since, the shooting she has become something more than a state congresswoman. Since the shooting Representative Gabrielle Giffords has become a symbol for American freedoms. As a Democrat she is most certainly a great resource to use when discussing gun control.
I hope that she takes the gun control fight on with her free time. I would love to see Gabrielle Giffords now that she is leaving congress to still make an impact in Arizona being such a gun friendly state. This is the state that in the same year passed a law stating you can carry a gun into a bar.
