U.S. Rep. Tom Price, M.D. (R-Ga) released a statement Wednesday in response to President Barack Obama’s sweeping gun control proposals. In the statement, Price strongly insists that thorough mental health screenings should be a priority in any new gun control measures.
Prior to his involvement in Washington politics, Price worked in a private practice as an orthopedic surgeon. Given his medical background, it’s not surprising that the Georgia lawmaker is a proponent of detailed mental health screenings as focal point of all gun laws.
“All Americans want our communities to be safe places to live, learn, work and play. As we review how best to prevent mass shootings and the loss of innocent lives we should make a robust analysis of America’s mental health system a priority,” said Price in a press release. “A proper diagnosis and comprehensive treatment are critical to ensure we are identifying indicators of violent behavior that may lead to horrific crimes. To do otherwise would mean we continue to fail not only those afflicted with mental illness, but also their families, our communities and our nation.”
Further, the Georgia lawmaker reaffirms that taking guns away from healthy, law abiding citizens is not a way to limit gun violence.
“We know that the safe use and responsible ownership of firearms has time and time again safeguarded individual and public safety,’ said Price. “In fact, guns are used more often to protect lives, not take lives.”
Price represents Georgia’s 6th congressional district.
