U.S. Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ga) released a statement today vowing to stand against President Barack Obama use of executive order to make gun laws more restrictive.
“When the president’s policies cannot pass Congress, it means the American people have rejected them,” said Graves in a press release. “A White House order for new gun controls would be in clear defiance of the will of the people and our democratic process. As a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights, I reject this threat from the White House and am prepared to introduce legislation to repeal any executive order that infringes on our right to keep and bear arms.”
Vice President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that the President is determined to act on gun violence and all options are on the table, including an executive order.
Biden is meeting with gun control as well as gun-rights supporters this month to come up with a solution.
After the December 14 shooting in Newtown, Connecticut which claimed lives of 20 first graders and six adults, President Obama promised to put his “full weight” behind a legislation aimed at prevention of such violence.
"We are not going to get caught up in the notion that unless we can do everything, we're going to do nothing. It's critically important that we act," said Biden on Wednesday. “There are executive orders, executive action that can be taken. We haven't decided what that is yet."
According to a report by the Congressional Research Service (CRS), U.S. Congress can repeal a Presidential order, "as long as [the order] is not constitutionally based," or take away its legal effect.
