Ga District 11: Gingrey defends support for high-capacity magazine restrictions

U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga) clarified today where he stands on gun control after some gun rights activists questioned his support of limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines he expressed at a Smyrna gathering on Thursday.

“As a father and grandfather, I am heartbroken at the tragedy in Newtown. No parent, child, or community should have to suffer such devastation and overwhelming grief,” said Gingrey in a statement. “At the same time, as we begin a national dialogue on how to prevent future tragedies, it is of paramount importance to defend our Second Amendment rights. Throughout my political career, I’ve been a tireless advocate of Second Amendment rights and will continue to be one moving forward.”

Gingrey spoke on Thursday at the Smyrna Area Council of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce breakfast where he said he’d consider supporting some restrictions on high-capacity ammunition magazines.

The Georgia lawmaker said no one really needs “a shot a second” gun capability if they’re target-shooting for fun. He also voiced his support for more detailed and broad background checks to be required prior to any gun purchase.

Gingrey represents Georgia’s 11th congressional district.
