Only one Republican U.S. Representative from Georgia, Paul Broun, voted against House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) as speaker of the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives today; the five-year House veteran voted for former Rep. Allen West (R-FL).
Boehner won his second term as House speaker with 220 votes out of 426 on the opening day of the 113th Congress.
The Ohio lawmaker has been criticized by conservative pundits for “caving in” on the recent “fiscal cliff” deal that increases taxes on most Americans.
Broun, 66, was elected to represent Georgia’s 10th congressional district in 2007. He is a member of the Tea Party Caucus and voted against the “fiscal cliff” deal.
A vote for West, who was one of the most outspoken Tea Party Caucus members, was just a statement against the establishment since the Florida lawmaker lost his reelection campaign in November and is no longer serving in Congress.
