FYI WIRZ: NASCAR Trucks to knock off the Rock in one day at Rockingham

NASCAR returned to “The Rock” in 2012 with a Camping World Truck Series event. This April, the NCWTS will come back with an exciting race packed into a single race day. The low ticket prices of that one day race will certainly thrill local fans.

Rockingham Speedway in Rockingham, N.C., was NASCAR tradition since the one mile track was built in 1965 and reconfigured to a high-banked oval in 1969. The facility was successful through NASCAR’s formative years, but succumbed to the increasing popularity of the sport in 2004. Owing to its rural surroundings, the track lost its NASCAR race date to more urban tracks in Texas and California.

New owner Andy Hillenburg reopened the track in 2008 to local racing and built a half- mlle track behind the mile facility that became a very popular NASCAR testing track owing to rules and proximity to the many teams based in the Charlotte area.

Having the Camping World Truck Series back in Rockingham brings credence to the revered facility.

When the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) makes its return to Rockingham Speedway for the Carolina 200 presented by Cheerwine in April, the field for the second event at the venerable one-mile track will not be set until morning of the race.

Qualifying for the race will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 14. The green flag is scheduled to drop at 2:00 p.m. for the 200-lap tilt.

"Qualifying and racing on the same day gives fans more value for their race ticket," said Rockingham Speedway President Andy Hillenburg. "It also builds some excitement among the drivers and fans if everyone wakes up on Sunday morning not knowing where the trucks will start come 2 o'clock."

General admission tickets for Saturday are $15 in advance ($20 at the gate) and grandstand tickets for Sunday range from $20 to $35.

Six major NASCAR tracks are within a day's drive of Tampa. Great destinations justify journeys.

Here the NASCAR venue is considered local if tracks are within a 10 hour drive from Tampa—Daytona International Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Atlanta Motor Speedway, Darlington Raceway, Talladega Superspeedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway. Rockingham Speedway is closer than CMS.
