The Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) proposed late season hunting regulations for some migratory game birds for the 2013-14 season. FWS proposed the rules on Thursday, Aug. 22. You can read the proposed rules at www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2013-08-22/html/2013-20381.htm.
FWS is offering a very short comment period as it operates under a short timeframe. You must send suggestions by Sept. 3. It plans to publish final rules around Sept. 20.
The rules apply to ducks, sea ducks, mergansers, Canada geese, white-fronted geese, brant, swans, sandhill cranes, coots, and many other species.
FWS is basically using last year's frameworks except where the regional flyway councils recommended changes. But it welcomes more info. FWS responded to all the recommendations made by the councils.
FWS proposed rules earlier in the year and met with the flyway councils. See stories linked to below for details.
FWS is estimating average size populations for most geese after a cold long spring followed by higher-than-average later temperatures.
