A new article at Blend Games discusses the current direction the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are headed in. As Microsoft and Sony continue to do battle it’s now a question of how they plan to sustain the viability of the hardware for these consoles as the years stress onward.
Microsoft has avoided the DVD storage limitations by focusing more efforts on utilizing digital distribution for the Xbox 360 and Sony has tackled the frame-rate issue by lending more support to developers with better optimization for multi-threaded programming.
While both consoles still have their upsides and downsides, we’re definitely seeing the age on the Xbox 360 and the continued untapped potential of the PlayStation 3. The real question is how will developers further utilize the Xbox 360 to gain more operation out of a console that has seen its limits with the likes of Mass Effect and Gears of War 2? Where-is with the PlayStation 3, the question arises as to how programmers will manage to utilize the SPUs for larger scale gameplay despite the fact that the system is already several years old?
