The next Crystal Langhorne, Elena Delle Donne or Tyreke Evans may be taking the court Aug. 17 and 18 in Randallstown, Md. Urban Youth Inc. will sponsor the Baltimore City Showdown featuring some of the top boys and girls in D.C., Maryland and Virginia playing AAU basketball beginning at 8 am Aug. 17.
Only eighth grade girl teams will play. Boy teams between fifth and eleventh grade will compete at the Randallstown Recreation Center and Windsor Middle School.
“We try to provide a safe haven and a structured environment to keep kids off the street,” tournament co-director Mark Sills said. The competition offers the players exposure to college scouts and scholarship possibilities.
While Delle Donne, Evans and Langhorne are professionals now, they each played in Sills-sponsored tournaments in the past.
The Filipino-American Youth Basketball Association Select team of Greater Washington, Meade Youth Basketball Association Wildcats, Southern Maryland Neptunes and Frederick’s Finest are among those girl’s teams competing.
