Kansas City has a deeply woven connection to film history. To this day, that tradition to continues through the many talented filmmakers right here in KC who are starting to find their way in that big, wide world of motion picture cinema. Some of that talent will be on display Wednesday night at the UMKC Student Film Showcase at the Tivoli Centers in Westport.

Sponsored by the University of Missouri-Kansas City Communications Department and the Student Film League, the showcase -- which is free, by the way -- will feature student films completed during the 2014 spring semester by students in various film classes at UMKC. The subjects range from short films, to animation, to experimental films.

Michael A. Friends, President of the UMKC Student Film League, is excited to show off this year's crop of talented filmmakers, and hopes it casts a bigger spotlight on the school's growing film program.

"The talent in the film department is impressive with returning students such as Nathan Manning and Andy Theis, who are talented cinematographers," Friends said. "We now have several members with writing, shooting, editing, and acting skills – so the goal is to make more movies."

When: Wednesday, May 14th, 6:30-8:00 pm
Where: Tivoli Cinemas, Westport
Cost: Free Admission

While the showcase is a great opportunity for students to see the fruits of their labor on the big screen, Friends said the UMKC Student Film League has some pretty lofty goals for next year.

"The goal of the Student Film League next season is to build on advances made this semester. More recruiting, screenings, another casting call, and more interaction with the KC Film community," Friends said. "We have a student short tentatively called 'Zombie Claus' that we hope to produce in the fall, and have it ready for the Fall Student showcase.

"The department is doing more to advance UMKC's film program, via production grants and the film showcase submission reimbursement program. The prospects of next semester are bright."
