It's not too often that you see a character on television knit, but it does happen. And whenever it does happen, the knitting community in Austin and across the country lets out a collective squeal and takes to Twitter to tell everyone about it.
While some characters might be expected to pick up the needles and engage in a little comfort crafting, others can come totally out of left field. One such example came from revived adult cartoon Futurama. After being cancelled by FOX, the cult favorite was brought back recently by Comedy Central, which airs new episodes on Thursdays at 9 pm Austin time.
On last week's episode, titled A Clockwork Origin, evolution was the comedic target, both those who refute it and those who tout it. When one planet becomes a scientific petri dish, the world is populated with robots rapidly reenacting the history of evolution. And as every culture connoisseur knows, the highest step in evolution is knitting, so of course Bender, the show's resident robot, gets needling.
It was a quick moment in the sun, but it was there. And really, knitters shouldn't be surprised. After all, Futurama is the brainchild of Matt Groening, who also created The Simpsons, which has had it's own knitting references.
If you missed it last week, you can catch a repeat of the episode at 8:30 pm before the newest episode premieres.
