Futsal tournament to kick off at the Overland Park Convention Center

The US Futsal Nationals Tournament, presented by United States Youth Futsal (USYF) and United States Adult Futsal, will take place at the Overland Park Convention Center, February 18-20. A unique form of indoor soccer, the sport is gaining popularity nationwide and the USYF is the fastest growing futsal organization in the United States with 40 active leagues.

As the only Futsal tournament sanctioned by the U.S. Soccer Association, the tournament will attract about 110 club teams to Overland Park. The primary age range of the players is from eight to 18 and many are traveling from as far as Florida, Massachusetts and New Jersey. The local economic impact of the event is anticipated to total $162,500.

“What makes this year’s tournament different is that is it under one roof for the very first time,” says John Sciore, director of development at USYF. “To have all 1100 players along with coaches and families in one space will create an atmosphere that is nothing short of electrifying.”

The set-up inside the Convention Center’s Exhibit Hall will include six indoor 65 x 100 foot courts and ground supported netting under one roof, which is an exciting feat for the Overland Park facility. “We are excited to welcome Futsal as a first time event,” says Global Spectrum’s Brett C. Mitchell, general manager of the Overland Park Convention Center. “The tournament is a great example of the flexibility of our facility, particularly the Exhibit Hall.  In the past we’ve brought outdoor sports inside with a driving range and volleyball courts, but nothing of this caliber. We love being able to accommodate such unique groups with our versatile space.”

Admission is open to the public and weekend passes cost $8, while Saturday and Sunday passes each cost $5. Monday’s final games are free of charge. For more information about the tournament, please visit http://www.usyouthfutsal.com/nationalfutsaltournament.
