There were nearly 600 races on the roads and trails in the state last year. You now find a race essentially anywhere within a few hours’ drive- even races on national holidays have become commonplace. But finding a track meet that is open to competitors have all shapes and sizes is harder to come by. The reasons for this vary. Many of the area’s top track and field complexes are booked during the spring season holding meets and daily practices. Adding to that downside is the fact that track events, for a number of years, have barely been promoted to older athletes. As it is now, all but a smattering of road races go below the five kilometer distance, which does not cater to the “fast-twitch” runners. Not every person needs to run long distance in order to be considered a “runner.” Just as much satisfaction can be attained from a solid 400 meter sprint as the experience completing a marathon.
The dimensions of the track (or “the oval” as it is called in running circles) can be seen as not only monotonous, but intimidating to runners unfamiliar with its layout. While the terrain of each road race is uniquely its own, the design of a track is more unvarying. No need worrying about measurement inaccuracies or having to dodge vehicular traffic on a track. This is the ideal place to measure your time progression over a long time.
