Fur Fury

While the weather is still wintry, enjoy a centuries-old staple of cold weather wear: fur. You need not skin a furry friend to partake in this luxurious fashion statement; faux fur is equally fashionable with the benefit of being much more affordable and far less controversial.

Culture

Films influence fashion from the catwalk to the city streets. Period pieces are particularly influential and often entice viewers to purchase clothing reminiscent of the era they have just observed. This season's Anna Karenina, set in frosty 19th century Russian high society, features numerous fabulous, fur-centric ensembles. Is it a coincidence that sales of Cossack hats spiked after the film's release?

Ethics

Fur is a very touchy subject. I am personally of the belief that fur production in modern times is unnecessary cruelty. In an age when we have a limitless variety of warm fabric options, fur clothing is no longer a winter necessity. This does not mean we should eliminate fur from our fashion vocabulary; it just means we should not kill animals for their aesthetically-pleasing pelts. Although I am against new fur, I do not see why we should waste (or destroy) old fur. Isn't wearing vintage fur items more eco-friendly than discarding it? And isn't appreciation for an old fur more respectful of the slain animal than destroying it would be? But if you still find any age of true fur off-putting (which I can understand), there's always faux fur!

How to wear

When wearing fur, keep the rest of your outfit simple. If you pair your fur with heavy jewelry or overly ornate clothing, you risk looking gaudy and antiquated. Also, because fur is so voluminous, you should wear fitted clothing beneath it. Try putting a fur coat or vest over a body-hugging dress and tights. Another option is putting fur with patterns. This trend gives a classic fur a very current feel.

Where to find fur apparel and accessories

If you have no problem wearing real fur, I would recommend looking for it in antique shops, estate sales, and the closets of older family members. If you you want to go faux, I would try these stores and websites:

ASOS

Anthropologie

Nordstrom

Garnet Hill

Urban Outfitters

Free People

Target

Gap

Banana Republic

Stay warm!
