Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman star in Red, which actually looks pretty damn cool
If you're a comic book geek, then the name Warren Ellis is probably one you're familiar with. And, if you're a film geek, you're probably familiar with most of the names in Red's awesome cast: John Malkovich, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren With Machine Guns (as she should now be known following this trailer), and more star in the latest DC comic book to become a big-budget action/comedy. It's one of the more kick-ass trailers we've seen all year, and that's saying something when those Scott Pilgrim trailers are still so fresh in all of our minds. See the trailer for Red for yourselves below, my gentle Examiner readers...
When Red was announced, I kinda ignored the whole thing because it sounded a little too much like another bomb that came out this year-- The Losers. Now that I've seen the trailer for the Bruce Willis/Helen Mirren/Warren Ellis mash-up, I'm singing a different tune. See what you guys think:
What'd you guys think? I kinda dig it, especially everything we just saw with Malkovich's character. Eleven straight years of LSD doses, did you say? Yeah, that'd probably lead to someone jumping out of the bushes with a crossbow. In case you're not a raging comic book geek, here's the official plot synopsis for the film (which arrives later this year-- and that's good news):
Red is the story of Frank Moses (Willis), a former black-ops CIA agent, who is now living a quiet life. That is until the day a hi-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him. With his identity compromised and the life of the woman he cares for, Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker), endangered, Frank reassembles his old team (Morgan Freeman, John
Malkovich and Helen Mirren) in a last ditch effort to survive. Also in the cast are Karl Urban, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, Ernest Borgnine, Julian McMahon, James Remar and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Hmmm. I'm intrigued. And that's one of the better-looking trailers for a relatively unknown comic book movie that I think we've ever been handed. Everyone here looks like they're having a lot of fun (especially Mirren with those big, sturdy...guns), and everyone also looks like they've been appropriately cast-- which, as you well know, was not the case with the recent, similar Kick-Ass, which many felt screwed the pooch by casting Nic Cage as "Big Daddy". Everyone here seems to be spot-on for the roles, though, huh?

Say what you will about comic book movies in general (I'm all for 'em as long as they don't suck like Wolverine did), but they certainly went out of their way to get cast members that looked the part. Just as a for instance, check out what Bruce Willis' character looks like in the comic below. It's not exact, but it's close enough for government work (no pun intended).
