At the Barona one eighth mile drag strip, a funny car slipped during pre-run inspection and literally ate the mechanic. According to the comments, a stud in the supercharger came loose and caused the throttle body to stick open. It cracked the case of the supercharger, lifted the injector, and as a result opened the throttle body to make the car move forward. The driver did not hit the throttle, but instead he was wise enough to kill the motor before anyone was severely hurt. Bellowing out thousands of horsepower next to your head has got to be the worst headache in the world!
Funny cars and other fully modified drag cars are very dangerous even when properly built. No matter how much safety checking a pre-run inspection you do, there's always a chance that failure will occur. Take for instance the following drag racing incident; there's really no way to prepare yourself and prevent that from happening. Just like aircraft, all the preemptive screening in the world sometimes isn't enough and fate simply happens. Lucky enough for this guy and the clutch explosion victim, they didn't get killed and fate was on their side.

Drag racing is not a sport for those who fear death. If working around explosive forces that generate thousands of horsepower isn't enough, then the 300 mile per hour quarter mile will. This is a sport for the fearless, the avid, and only the true speed junky. Street racing is one thing, but when dealing with massive power such as what's found in a funny car it's on a whole other level. The guy in the following video is lucky to be alive, had one variable changed he could have been easily caught under the car and dragged down the strip at blistering speeds. Thank goodness for the drivers quick reaction time!
