Funky Monks is the self-proclaimed "Ultimate Red Hot Chili Peppers Tribute" band. Once you see them live, it is hard to disagree.

I have always been sketchy of tribute bands. There are many out there, not naming names, that claim to be tribute bands, but they are really just a group of guys and gals who believe they have specialized in one particular band's songs. Go to Youtube and one can find many artists who play exceptional covers. Go to any local open mic night and you can see an artist play a cover song. But if one wants to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers live when the real group is not on tour, go check out the Funky Monks.

The Funky Monks is the ultimate tribute band. The artists of this group are Paul Guziec, drums; Mike Walker, guitar; Ryan Machnica, vocals; and founder, Jeff Genualdi slapping the bass. The band formed in 2003 and has played venues and shows in the Midwestern and Eastern United States. They are a hit at college campuses and universities all over these areas.

I had the privilege to watch Funky Monks perform at Otto's in DeKalb, IL on Saturday and it was a blast. Ryan dresses up like Anthony Kiedus. Ryan performs complete with excellent attire, a disgustingly similar voice, and an Anthony Kiedus wig exhibiting Anthony's most famous hairdo. Mike on guitar looks and performs like a young John Frusciante. Paul has many of the mannerisms and talent of Chad Smith on the drums. Jeff, who should be called Flea Junior, slaps that bass with generosity and compassion. Each of these members has an amazing talent for performing the Red Hot Chili Peppers' tunes.

Funky Monks will be playing many upcoming shows near the suburbs of Chicago. I know I am a Rockford Area Music Examiner, but these guys are worth the drive. They will not disappoint. If you close your eyes at one of their shows, it feels like the Red Hot Chili Peppers are performing on the stage right in front of you.  Also, be sure to request songs for their set list when you go to see a show.   Funky Monks truly are the Ultimate Red Hot Chili Peppers Tribute Band.
