A veteran City of Marietta firefighter who died last week after collapsing at the scene of a wreck will be buried Tuesday morning.
Mr. Lonnie Lee Nutt, 49, a firefighter engineer, suffered a medical emergency Thursday while helping an injured motorist, Marietta police said.
Around 4:30 p.m., Mr. Nutt drove Engine 53 with two others on board to a wreck with injuries on Whitlock Avenue, less than a mile from Station 3, police spokesman Officer David Baldwin said.
“When they arrived on the scene and begin to assist with the injured patient, Fire Engineer Nutt fell to the ground with a medical issue of his own,” Officer Baldwin said.
His fellow firefighters began diligently working on Mr. Nutt until an ambulance.
“He fell from what appeared to be a massive heart attack, and they immediately started working him as well as trying to help the patient that was already there,” Mr. Scott Tucker, the city’s fire marshal, told WSB radio.
Shortly after arriving at WellStar Kennestone Hospital, the firefighter died.
Mr. Nutt, an Oklahoma native, began his career with the city in May 1994 and had served as a firefighter, inspector, investigator and most recently as a firefighter engineer.
“We had a lot that we depended on him for because he was a very good firefighter,” Mr. Tucker said. “He was somebody that was knowledgeable. You could depend on him and he had the expertise to do a lot of things.”
Mr. Nutt lived in Kennesaw with his wife, Mr. Tucker said. He is also survived by a daughter.
His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. at Roswell Street Baptist Church, Officer Baldwin said.
