The obituary for Courtney Cash said “She was a loving Mother, Daughter, Granddaughter, and Friend”

The family has asked that donations be made in lieu of flowers for an educational fund that has been started for Courtney Cash’s only child. Donations for Cameryn Cash can be made at the funeral home or to Bank of America 345 East Main Street Hendersonville, TN 37075.

Johnny Cash’s great niece was found dead on March 19, 2014. 27 year old Wayne Masciarella was charged with first degree murder for her death. Courtney Cash was the 23 year old great niece of Johnny Cash. Cash's body was found inside a home in a chest. Masciarella was friends with Cash and her boyfriend.

Masciarella has also been accused of stabbing William Austin Johnson which was Cash’s boyfriend. Johnson was treated at a hospital for the wounds he received during the attack. Johnson had taken his 20 month old daughter with him to the hospital. The baby did not receive any injuries during the attack.

Tommy Cash is Johnny Cash’s brother and the victim’s grandfather. Tommy Cash released a statement following the incident saying "Courtney and her boyfriend are beloved members of my family and like you we have a lot of questions and emotions that we are beginning to sort through today'' adding "We are completely heartbroken. It is a time like this that we are grateful for our faith and trusting the loving guidance of God."

Putnam County Sheriff David Andrews said "This is a senseless, tragic death of a young lady whose life was probably taken as a direct or indirect result of drugs." Masciarella was later arrested and booked without bond and is currently being held in the Putnam County Jail on a first degree murder charge. Masciarella was previously arrested more than 20 times in Putnam County.
