Fundraising has begun through a Metro Denver nonprofit to build a park in memory of murder victim Jessica Ridgeway, age 10.
Ridgeway was killed Oct. 5, 2012.
At this point, construction of the proposed $450,000 project is slated to begin this spring, with a dedication later in 2013.
The Westminster Legacy Foundation is raising money to renovate Chelsea Park, in her neighborhood. On Nov. 26, the Westminster City Council voted to rename the park as Jessica Ridgeway Memorial Park in her honor. Donors may contribute online through GivingFirst.org, the donation portal of the Community First Foundation.
Givingfirst.org is best known for its role in Colorado Gives Day during December, but is available for donations for Colorado’s nonprofits throughout the year.
The Ridgeway family has given its full support to the project. In a statement, the Ridgeways said that they were excited and proud of the city. “Jessica would want the park to be a place that embraces the fun and joy she had playing there with her scooter, dog and friends. It will be a place for families to gather and enjoy for years.”
Established in 2001, the Westminster Legacy Foundation has a benefited 50 grant recipients.
