Friends and family have come together to raise nearly $50,000 for Randy Gener, an award-winning journalist who was badly beaten and have been hospitalized since Jan. 17. According to a report by the New York Daily News on Jan. 29, the fundraiser was set up to help pay medical bills.

Gener suffered a head injury as a result of the brutal beating that occurred in the early-morning hours at Seventh Ave. and 54th St. in Manhattan. He underwent brain surgery immediately after being rushed to the hospital. Police were investigating whether the beating was a hate crime before the suspect was captured. But found no evidence that was the case.

24-year-old Leighton Jennings, arrested for the attack, claims the beat down stemmed from an argument on the street and was not a bias attack. Jennings awaits arraignment on Wednesday (Jan. 29).

As Gener remains hospitalized, friends have set up a fund-raising site and raised more than 47,000 for the Filipino-American editor who is described as a man who is loved by community.

Liz Casasola, one of the friends who set up the site, told the Daily News:

“The road to recovery is going to be very long and we’re not sure what his insurance will cover. He is just so loved in the Filipino community and we wanted to come together to do what we could.”

The love for Randy Gener has raised most of the $70,000 goal set by his friends and family.
