Funcom reveals The Secret World release date

Funcom today announced that their forthcoming MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) The Secret World will officially launch on June 19th, 2012.

Although The Secret World was originally scheduled to launch in April, Funcom delayed its release so they could continue fine-tuning the game.

The Secret World is a modern-day MMORPG based upon the premise that monsters, myths, urban legends, and various conspiracy theories are all real. Combine the elements of television shows such as Supernatural, Fringe, and The X-Files and you’ve probably got a pretty good idea of what the game is about. (You can read a little more in my Secret World preview from PAX Prime 2011.)

You play as one of three factions: The Dragon, The Illuminati, or the Templars, all of which keep the darkness of the world at bay. Unfortunately, they don’t tend to get along with one another either, which sets the stage for plenty of PvP (Player versus Player) gaming.

In recent months, The Secret World has been in the not-so-secret closed Beta (with 750,000 registered beta testers) and according to Funcom’s press release overall feedback has been positive. If you’re looking for an action-oriented MMORPG with nary an orc in sight, keep your eyes on The Secret World.

The Secret World is published by Electronic Arts Inc. If you want to sign up for the beta, go the official Web site for The Secret World.
