Fun things to do in Los Feliz this week: Jan 4-10

Happy New Year! It's the first weekend of the new year, and there's lots of things to do this weekend in LA. Here's a few to consider when planning your weekend and the week ahead:

Reading is always a great escape, and our local bookstore, Skylight Books is one of the best around. Although the author events are done for the year, don't forget to check them out for that perfect book - for yourself or a gift. Take some time and enjoy this jewel of Los Feliz, where you can catch up on some great reads and do some early Christmas shopping.

It's never a bad time to catch a movie, and this weekend is no exception. This weekend, at the Vintage Cinemas Los Feliz 3 you can catch Silver Linings Playbook, screening at 1:15 p.m., 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:50 p.m., Les Miserables, screening at 1:45 p.m., 5:10 p.m. and 8:50 p.m., or Promised Land, screening at 1:15 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7:10 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. Over at the Vintage Cinemas Vista Theatre, it's the latest from Mr. Tarentino, with Django Unchained, screening at 1:15 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.

Now that the holidays are over, most of the music venues are back in action. Don't miss these great shows this week: At WitZend in Venice, catch Belinda Skinner (with my god friend J'Nae) at 9 p.m. tonight. Tomorrow night, catch Terra Naomi at 8 p.m., followed by Sonia Rae at 10 p.m. Then on Tuesday at 9 p.m., catch Danni Rosner.

At the Hotel Cafe, don't miss David Ryan Harris at 10:30 p.m. tonight. Tomorrow night, it's the incomparable Keaton Simons at 9 p.m., followed by the amazing Steve Carlson at 10:30 p.m. Then on Tuesday at 9 p.m., come celebrate the release of her new CD, Think Twice, with Nina Storey.

Of course, all you football fans will be watching the playoffs - don't miss out on the great sports bars in the area, including my favorite, Hooters in Burbank.

If you enjoy the chilly outdoors, don't forget about the local farmers' markets on Wednesdays from 12-6 p.m. at Barnsdall Park and on Sundays from 10-4 p.m. at the Post Office. There's also a farmer's market at the Autry Museum in Griffith Park on Saturdays from 10-5 p.m.

Don't forget iTunes, ReverbNation and YouTube - be adventurous and be the first to discover new talent - then share it with us all.
