The Oscars are now upon us (Sunday at 4 p.m. PST) so we can finally find out what the best picture of 2012 was. Looking forward to watching them with my wife and friends, as well as taking in a StageIt show featuring Twenty to Watch artist Keaton Simons (Sunday at 6 p.m. PST). In the meantime, here's a few other things to do this weekend and next week.
Reading is always a great escape, and our local bookstore, Skylight Books is one of the best around. This week offers something new. Join us for a 10-month journey through the world of myth as we read the four volumes comprising Joseph Campbell’s groundbreaking series “The Masks of God”. The first meeting is Monday at 7:30 p.m. Take some time and enjoy this jewel of Los Feliz, where you can catch up on some great reads and do some shopping.
It's never a bad time to catch a movie, and this weekend is no exception. This weekend, at the Vintage Cinemas Los Feliz 3 you can catch some recent releases, including "Side Effects" and "Identity Thief," screening at 1:30 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. or "Amour," screening at 2:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Over at the Vintage Cinemas Vista Theatre, Bruce Willis' character John McClain returns in "A Good Day to Die Hard," screening at 3:15 p.m., 5:45 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Plenty of plays out there for all you theater lovers. Check out www.plays411.com and www.Goldstar.com for discounts and listings. Make sure you take the time to see Happy Face Sad Face at the Lillian Theatre, which closes on Sunday. It's one of the best plays I've ever seen.
There are great venues in town to catch the latest indie music. Don't miss these great shows this week:
At world famous Genghis Cohen, catch Marcus Eaton at 10:30 p.m. on Friday. Then on Wednesday, don't miss Geoff Pearlman at 7:30 p.m., followed by Kiki Ebsen at 8:30 p.m.
At the Hotel Cafe, catch the final residency of Sweetwater & the Satisfaction at 9 p.m. on Saturday. On Monday, and Tuesday, catch Skye with special guest Madi Diaz on Monday and Javier Dunn on Tuesday. Both nights start at 7 p.m. Then on Wednesday, don't miss the record release show for local artist Scott James.
Over at WitZend in Venice, on Friday catch Mitchell Schaffer at 10 p.m. Then on Saturday, it's Michelle Monica at 10 p.m. Finally on Thursday, catch the amazing David Ryan Harris as he finishes his Thursday night residency at 10 p.m. Come early for Shannon Hurley at 8 p.m. and Amie Miriello at 9 p.m.
If you enjoy the outdoors, don't forget about the local farmers' markets on Wednesdays from 12-6 p.m. at Barnsdall Park and on Sundays from 10-4 p.m. at the Post Office. There's also a farmer's market at the Autry Museum in Griffith Park on Saturdays from 10-5 p.m.
Don't forget iTunes, ReverbNation and YouTube - be adventurous and be the first to discover new talent - then share it with us all.
