Fun things to do in Los Feliz: March 1-7

The Oscars were a disappointment, with the exception of the role that music played in the show (just say no to Seth!), but the awards shows are all behind us now. Thank goodness this weekend brings the Durango Songwriters Expo to California, as well as the amazing PaleyFest at UCLA, where you can meet the creative teams and cast of your favorite TV shows. Besides these ideas, here's a few other things to do this weekend and next week.

Reading is always a great escape, and our local bookstore, Skylight Books is one of the best around. Take some time and enjoy this jewel of Los Feliz, where you can catch up on some great reads and do some shopping.

It's never a bad time to catch a movie, and this weekend is no exception. This weekend, at the Vintage Cinemas Los Feliz 3 you can catch some recent releases, including "Side Effects" and "Quartet," screening at 1:30 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. or "Amour," screening at 2:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Over at the Vintage Cinemas Vista Theatre, it's "Jack the Giant Slayer," screening at 1:15 p.m., 4:10 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:45 p.m.

Plenty of plays out there for all you theater lovers. Check out www.plays411.com and www.Goldstar.com for discounts and listings.

There are great venues in town to catch the latest indie music. Don't miss these great shows this week:

At the Hotel Cafe, catch the incredible Ari Hest on Friday at 9 p.m. and Morgan Karr's CD release show on Sunday at 8 p.m. Then on Wednesday don't miss the first night of the five week residency of Twenty to Watch artists David and Devine from 10 p.m. to midnight. Come early and catch Sweet Talk Radio at 9 p.m.

Over at WitZend in Venice, on Saturday at 9 p.m. catch Julia Othmer, followed by actress and singer/songwriter Minnie Drive at 10 p.m. On Tuesday at 9 p.m., it's Jacq Becker. Then on Wednesday, don't miss the insanely talent trio of talent, beginning with Aijia Lise at 8 p.m., Sonia Rao at 9 p.m. and ending with American Idol Elliott Yamin at 10 p.m.

If you enjoy the outdoors, don't forget about the local farmers' markets on Wednesdays from 12-6 p.m. at Barnsdall Park and on Sundays from 10-4 p.m. at the Post Office. There's also a farmer's market at the Autry Museum in Griffith Park on Saturdays from 10-5 p.m.

Don't forget iTunes, ReverbNation and YouTube - be adventurous and be the first to discover new talent - then share it with us all.
