It's the weekend before NAMM comes to town, and there are more than enough things to do this weekend in LA. Here's a few to consider when planning your weekend and the week ahead:
Reading is always a great escape, and our local bookstore, Skylight Books is one of the best around. Although the author events are done for the year, don't forget to check them out for that perfect book - for yourself or a gift. Take some time and enjoy this jewel of Los Feliz, where you can catch up on some great reads and do some early Christmas shopping.
It's never a bad time to catch a movie, and this weekend is no exception. This weekend, at the Vintage Cinemas Los Feliz 3 you can catch three Oscar contenders: "Silver Linings Playbook" or "Beasts of the Southern Wild," screening at 1:30 p.m., 4:10 p.m., 7:10 p.m. and 9:50 p.m., or "Zero Dark Thirty," screening at 1:50 p.m., 5:15 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Over at the Vintage Cinemas Vista Theatre, Django Unchained continues, screening at 1:30 p.m., 5:15 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.
Plenty of plays out there for all you theater lovers. Check out www.plays411.com and www.Goldstar.com for discounts and listings. I'm planning on attending Happy Face, Sad Face at the Lillian Theatre on Sunday.
There are great venues in town to catch the latest indie music. Don't miss these great shows this week: Tomorrow night at 8 p.m., don't miss the incredible Tyler Hilton, with Teddy Geiger and Ryan Cabrera as they make a stop at the Roxy on the current tour. If you want to support Tyler's charity T.H. Books for Kids, you can bring books to the show. Check out the article for more details.
At the Hotel Cafe, catch the residency of Pebaluna at 9:45 each Friday in January. On Saturday, don't miss NBC The Voice's Naia Kete at 9:00 p.m. Then on Sunday, join Nic Harcourt & KCSN for Smart Rock, sarting at 7 p.m.
Over at WitZend in Venice, catch Alaina Blair at 8 p.m. tonight. Then on Sunday, it's the talents of Moi Navarro at 9 p.m. and Connie Lim at 10 p.m. Finally, don't miss the multi-talented Jason Adamo Band on Thursday at 8 p.m., followed by Danni Rosner at 9 p.m.
NAMM comes to the Anaheim Convention, starting on Wednesday for press and on Thursday for all the other badge-holders. Tower of Power, Elton John and others are slated to perform during the event. Watch for my daily reports next week.
Of course, all you football fans will be watching the AFC and NFC playoffs - don't miss out on the great sports bars in the area, including my favorite, Hooters in Burbank.
If you enjoy the outdoors, don't forget about the local farmers' markets on Wednesdays from 12-6 p.m. at Barnsdall Park and on Sundays from 10-4 p.m. at the Post Office. There's also a farmer's market at the Autry Museum in Griffith Park on Saturdays from 10-5 p.m.
Don't forget iTunes, ReverbNation and YouTube - be adventurous and be the first to discover new talent - then share it with us all.
