Fun things to do for Mother's Day

Mother's Day 2014
Mother's Day 2014By Rebecca Robbins

Mother's Day originated in the United States in the early 1900s. Although there are older traditions that celebrate similar holidays, they are not considered to be the origins of Mother's Day. Mother's Day is meant to honor mothers and their influence in society, maternal bonds and motherhood itself.

The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar.

More phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year. These holiday chats with Mom often cause phone traffic to spike by as much as 37 percent

Common gifts on Mother's Day include: flowers, dinner or lunch in a restaurant, jewelry, gift cards, clothing and treats such as a trip to a spa. Books, CDs, housewares and gardening tools are popular gifts as well.

South Bend Pottawatomie Zoo will be having Mother's day activities on Saturday May 10, 2014 from 10am to 4 pm or you can treat your mom to something less wild like a day at the salon. Head downw town South Bend for some fun boutique treasures or make her something from your heart. This mom will be spending the day watching her kids ride bikes and then something fancy from Dairy Queen.

Happy Mother's Day!
