Fun stuff on Long Island this Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day Weekend is upon us and Long Island is the perfect place to spend some unique and fun times to finish off the summer of 2011 with a bang.  Here are three big and fun events to whet anyone’s appetite for some great summer fun.  Check it out:

65thAnnual Shinnecock Powwow, Shinnecock Reservation, Southampton

If you’ve never been to a powwow, this would be the one to experience.  For four days over the Labor Day Weekend, the recently recognized Shinnecock Indian Nation celebrates their heritage and culture with traditional foods, dancing, music and other types of interesting performances.  The event has become a Long Island institution and everyone should experience it at least once.  The powwow begins Friday and lasts all the way to Monday.  For more information, please see the Shinnecock’s website below.

5thAnnual Huntington Lighthouse Music Fest, Huntington Harbor, Huntington

This unique and popular fun event features bands from a wide variety of musical genres performing atop the working lighthouse in the middle of Huntington Harbor.  How cool is that?  Spectators can only watch the performances from among the more than 700 boats and charters that will surround the lighthouse.  Performances begin at 11:15 a.m. Saturday with the Caribbean sounds of King Wellington and conclude with a show by the Pamela Betti Band at 6:30.  Check out the music fest’s website below for more details.

The Hamptons Classic, 240 Snake Hollow Road, Bridgehampton

One of the world’s most prestigious and popular equestrian competitions takes place this week in the Hamptons, beginning on Wednesday, August 31st and continuing on until Sunday, September 4th.  Some of the world’s best riders and horses will be on hand for this always exciting event.  The show also features other attractions for the whole family, including pony rides, zoo animals, a food court and more than 70 boutiques for fun shopping.  See the Hamptons Classic website below for more.
