Fun ideas for September activities and events in Virginia


Having some fun in the fall

Just because the summer is ending doesn't mean there aren't many activities throughout Virginia for a little fall fun.

For those of us who live In Prince William County, September, is a beautiful time of the year. The leaves are still green and the weather is pleasantly warm, not like the hot dog days of summer. Even though the kids are back to school, there are still many events outdoors on the weekends.

Speaking of kids, there is a Kids Fishing Tournament held every Saturday in Leessylvania State Park in Woodbridge. Children 5-15 may participate and no fishing licenses are required. Volunteers are available to help teach techniques and proper handling of equipment. Winners in different age groups will be awarded trophies. Some materials are available but they encourage you to bring your own equipment and supplies. This runs every Saturday through September 26th. The address is 2001 Daniel K. Ludwig Drive.

The 32nd Burke Centre Annual Festival, with handmade arts and crafts, musical and dance performances, Pony rides and much, much more will be held September 12th-13th, at the Burke Centre Conservancy. While there are many activities for kids, adults can also enjoy delicious wine tasting while relaxing to live music. The hours are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday, September 19th-20th, Mount Vernon will hold their 18th Century Craft Fair. Artisans from across the nation will demonstrate their expertise on how tools, dinnerware, metals and many other materials were made during the time of George Washington and will be selling their items as well. Doors open at 9:00 am and close at 5:00 pm. 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy, on the south end of the GW Parkway.

And on the final weekend in September, there is the Historic Town of Occoquan's Fall Arts and Crafts Show. Over 350 vendors will display and sell their handcraft items and there will be plenty of delicious food. Live musical performances will also be throughout the two-day event.
