Today marks the end of summer and the beginning of the fall season. To get into the spirit of the new season, here are a few fun facts, a bit of trivia and family-friendly fall events in Atlanta.
Fun facts and trivia about fall:
- Maples, Oaks, Elms, Birch & Ash trees are just a few of the trees that give spectacular colors during the autumn season.
- Fall colors are best when late summer is dry and autumn has bright sunny days and cool nights below 40 degrees.
- The fall planting months are September, October and November.
- The pumpkin is a member of the gourd family, which is native to the Western Hemisphere. There is evidence to support that the natives of Mexico were eating gourds as early as 5500 BC.
- The fall season runs from September 21st through November 21st.
- Some say hot cocoa is healthier than hot chocolate.
- Why is the season called "Fall"? What happens in the natural world during this season? The leaves on many trees die and fall to the ground. About five hundred (500) years ago, when Middle English was spoken, expressions like "fall of the leaf" and "fall of the year" were quite common, and the season name "Fall" comes from them.
- In fall, football season is in full swing and baseball season is ending.
- The days become shorter in the fall. Daylight saving time ends in 2011 on November 6th, the date Americans set their clocks back one hour.
Events to celebrate fall in Atlanta:
The best way to celebrate fall is to take your family on an outdoor adventure. Below are several places or events to celebrate the glorious days of fall.
- The Chattahoochee Nature Center: Located in Roswell, the Chattahoochee Nature Center offers miles of hiking trails, canoe trips, an outdoor pavilion for events, a Discovery Center and so much more. It's the perfect destination for an outdoor adventure in Atlanta. Go to their website to see this weekend’s schedule of events.
- Uncle Shucks Corn Maze and Pumpkin Farm: Uncle Shucks is now open in Dawsonville. Just a short drive from Atlanta, Uncle Shucks offers a brand new corn maze, a huge pumpkin farm, hayrides and much more.
- Octoberfest in Helen, Georgia. Georgia’s biggest Octoberfest is now open in Helen in the North Georgia Mountains. Families can enjoy German music, live entertainment, food and drinks now through October 30th. The annual Octoberfest Parade happens in 2011 on Saturday, October 24th.
- Rogers Bridge celebrates National Public Lands Day. Bring your family and join in the celebration of National Public Lands Day at Georgia’s newest national park land, Rogers Bridge in Johns Creek. It takes place on Saturday, September 24th and features Chattahoochee Nature Center’s “Birds of Prey” exhibition, environmental games, Dixieland music and refreshments. 10:00a.m.-12:00 noon.
