Chicago parents wanting to groom their children to become scientists (mad or otherwise) when they grow up can start the process young with themed wooden block sets that teach science concepts and knowledge.
Young Mad Scientist's First Blocks
At first glance, the wooden blocks that come with the Young Mad Scientist's First Blocks set may seem like any other ABC blocks, with nicely carved pictures illustrating each letter of the alphabet. Closer examination reveals, however, that the pictures are not traditional alphabet block subjects like horses and queens, but rather mad scientist-related subjects like henchmen and quantum physics.
The purpose of the blocks is obviously to entertain adults as much (or even more!) than it is to teach children, but kids will still benefit from being introduced to concepts such as dirigibles, organs, and viruses (and peasants with pitchforks).
See Xylocopa for a set of 5 laser-engraved American maple wood blocks (all 26 letters are illustrated).

Craft-E-Family Blocks
For simpler but more serious sets of science-themed wooden blocks, Chicago families can order themed kids play blocks from Craft-E-Family. These natural maple wood blocks have kid-safe rounded corners and a nontoxic beeswax finish.
Each set of nine blocks features the names and pictures of different kinds of animals. Themes include Barnyard Basics, Bugs and Reptiles, Dinosaurs, and two sets of Wild Animal Blocks. By playing with these blocks, toddlers will learn what each animal is called and what it looks like.
Blocks teach developmental skills ranging from fine-motor skills to visual perception. Why not increase the learning and slip some science knowledge in as well with either Young Mad Scientist's First Blocks or the themed kids play blocks from Craft-E-Family?
