Fun and educational activities await at Mohican Wildlife Weekend

The Mohican Wildlife Weekend is a multi-venue, family-friendly event in the Loudonville-Ashland-Mansfield area offering visitors a chance to celebrate Spring, nature and Ohio's native creatures on Friday, April 25, Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27. Most activities are free.

Mohican Wildlife Weekend Offering dozens of fun and educational activities spotlighting wildlife habitats, heritage and natural history, the 13th annual Mohican Wildlife Weekend (sponsored by Gander Mountain) has something for all ages that is sure to please.

Venues for the wide variety of activities this year are Mohican State Park and Resort, Malabar Farm State Park, Gorman Nature Center, Ohio Bird Sanctuary, Mohican Outdoor School, the Cooke Family Wildlife Conservation Area, Pleasant Hill Lake Park and the Wolf Creek Pine Run Grist Mill.

This year's theme is "Raise your Outdoor IQ" and several of the activities revolve around that theme.

Keynote speaker for the event is Chip Gross, an author and an outdoor & wildlife photographer.

Weekend activities include fly fishing demonstrations, photographing birds of prey, children's crafts, a hands-on animal exhibit, nature walks, a Wild Herbal Hike, Geocatching 101, a Birds of Prey Show, fire building demonstrations, a cooking with a Dutch oven demonstration and birding boat tours of the Clear Fork Reservoir (at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary). You will need to purchase a ticket ($10) for the birding boat tours.

This year's event also includes activities at Wolf Creek Pine Run Grist Mill where visitors can tour a 1831 operating grist mill and log cabins from the early 1800's and get a glimpse of Ohio pioneer life. Cost is $3 for adults and $1 for children (10-20). Children under 10 are free.

Also at Wolf Creek Pine Run Grist Mill, be sure not to miss the special program being offered by the Columbus Zoo entitled "The Animals that Travel with Jack Hanna" where you can get up close to a variety of birds, reptiles and amphibians.

Activities on Saturday, April 26 at Malabar State Park include a 5K Walk/Waddle/Run, Big House tours, wagon rides and an evening barn dance being held from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. in the Farm's main barn. Entertainment will be provided by the Backporch Swing Band.

New this year, the Triple M Riding Rescue Ranch from Loudonville will be offering pony and horse rides at the Cooke Family Wildlife Conservation Area.

Mohican State Park & Resort is located at Routes 3 & 97 in Loudonville, Ohio. Pleasant Hill Lake Park is located at 3431 Ohio 95 in Perrysville, Ohio. Malabar Farm State Park is located at 4050 Bromfield Rd. in Lucas, Ohio and Wolf Creek Pine Run Grist Mill is at State Route 3 South in Loudonville, Ohio.
