Fujifilm named among top innovators of 2013

Camera maker Fujifilm has just been named among the top innovators of 2013 by Thomson Reuters. Every year, Thomson Reuters recognizes the world's top innovating companies, which is based on three criteria: patent output, patent grant success rate, global reach of the patent portfolio, and patent influence.

For the record, Fuji has gotten 10,533 patents from 2010 through 2012.

Also, this award does not recognize a specific branch of the company, such as the camera division, but the company a a whole. However, Fuji's camera division deserves a lot of credit for what it has been doing in the past few years.

In 2010, Fuji made headlines with its retro-styled, APS-C sensor X100 point and shoot model. With the camera's hybrid viewfinder combining an optical view with a digital information overlay, stunning imager quality, all-metal construction, and undeniably cool look, it was just about impossible to find the camera anywhere for about a year. Then, just as it was becoming possible to get one's hands on the X100, Fuji launched its X-mount line of interchangeable lens cameras, starting with the X-Pro1, which was announced along with the first 3 X-mount lenses. Taking a lot of cues from the X100, the X-Pro1 added the ability to change lenses while eliminating the optical low-pass filter to make for even better images, at least according to Fuji's claims, which were confirmed to be true once the cameras started making their way to stores.

In the time since then, Fuji has updated its X100 and added more cameras and lenses to its X-mount line as well as offering some groundbreaking, more traditional point and shoot models.

All in all, Fuji really deserves this award for the way it has broken new photographic ground in the past few years.
