Earlier today, the Department of Defense announced the death of Command Sgt. Major Martin R. Barreras who died of wounds inflicted when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.

CSM Barreras, 49, of Tucson, Arizona, died May 13, 2014, at San Antonio Military Medical Center from wounds suffered on May 6, in Herat Province, Afghanistan.

Herat Province is located on the far western edge of Afghanistan, bordering Turkmenistan and Iran. Several years ago Herat Province was considered by Soldiers to be the “safer” side of the war-torn country.

There have been no reports of other Soldiers who might have been injured in this enemy attack.
