The Sundance Film Festival 2013 ends tomorrow but the Awards Ceremony was held on Saturday, January 26 in Park City, Utah. The Awards Ceremony began at 9 p.m. and was hosted by JGL himself, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Levitt acted, wrote and made his directorial debut at the festival with his film, Don Jon's Addiction.
The Awards Ceremony capped off a 10-day festival which began on January 17 and featured highly anticipated films like the Ashton Kutcher-helmed, Steve Jobs biopic, jOBS and the festival's buzziest film, Fruitvale. As a special treat for those not in attendance, they could watch the Awards Ceremony streaming live online at the Sundance Film Festival website.
The event was very casual for an awards show and befitting a film festival. Most men wore buttoned down shirts and jeans. Some even threw on a casual suit jacket. The ladies wardrobe was the same. There was no one asking, “who are you wearing,” at this ceremony. There wasn’t even a teleprompter for Levitt to read from. He stood at the small black, red-letter adorned podium wearing hipster glasses and reading from a script which he held in front of his face for all to see.
Fruitvale was the big winner of the night. They took home the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for a dramatic film. Director Ryan Coogler said that he wrote the film because he wanted to show how people treat the ones they love and the ones they don’t know. The film is based on a true story and follows Oscar (Michael B. Jordan, Chronicle) as he interacts with loved ones and strangers on the last day of 2008.
Blood Brother is a documentary about a man named Rocky who finds meaning in his life when he leaves the comfort of U.S. living and moves to India to live with AIDS-infected children and abandoned women. This film took home both the Grand Jury prize and the Audience Award for documentary.
The other winners took home one award and many of the most buzzed about movies like Lovelace starring Amanda Seyfried as porn star, Linda Lovelace and jOBS were left empty-handed. Even Levitt failed to take home an award. He joined the ranks of Tina Fey and Amy Poehlor who both served as host and nominees at the Golden Globes but failed to take home an award of their own.
