Call this scenario "How I Wanted to Become the Male Anne Hathaway." Only unlike Anne's success in shedding pounds to win acclaim for her role in "Les Miz," Ashton Kutcher's plan to follow a fruitarian diet in order to emulate Steve Jobs sent him to the hospital. The hospitalization occurred prior to the start of shooting the movie "Jobs," reported the Los Angeles Times on Jan. 28.
"I ended up in the hospital two days before we started shooting the movie," Ashton revealed. "I was like doubled over in pain, and my pancreas levels were completely out of whack, which was completely terrifying, considering everything." However, Ashton linked the problems to the fruitarian diet, admitting that the highly restricted food plan led to "some serious issues." So what went wrong? Here are the possibilities:
- No drama with this one: Gas pains. Excessive flatulence can be so painful that some think that they're having a heart attack or appendicitis. Too much fruit can cause gas to rival the farting cowboy in "Blazing Saddles."
- Digestive problems also could have caused Ashton's problems. Going from limited fiber in your diet to large amounts of fiber can be painful - and even hazardous to your health, just as with anything in excess.
- Cramps from continuing his regular exercise routine without enough calories. A fruitarian diet, by its nature (most fruitarians eat other only fruit or add nuts and seeds), is calorie-restricted.
Memo to Ashton: For your health, try expanding your horizons with a more flexible approach, such as the "The 80/10/10 Diet" or "The Flexitarian Diet: The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease, and Add Years to Your Life."
