Halloween is a lot more fun with jack-o-lanterns and you want to make sure to choose the right pumpkin without spending too much money. Storage of plays an important part in stretching the money you spend on pumpkins for Halloween.
Pumpkins chosen for use as jack-o-lanterns should be appealing to the eye and have a deep, rich orange color. Pumpkins used for carving should also be chosen with their shape in mind. If you purchase a pumpkin with a flat spot you can use that as a part of your jack-o-lantern’s design.
You need to buy a pumpkin that does not have any cuts, soft spots or bruising as these things can cause rot to set in quickly on a pumpkin. The pumpkin shell should feel hard and not have any give when a medium amount of pressure is applied. Also make sure the stem is still attached and not falling off the pumpkin.
The manner in which your store pumpkins used for jack-o-lanterns is very important. You will need to find a cool and dry place and do not handle the pumpkin often. Storing them in this manner will toughen the pumpkins rinds and make them less prone to rot. You can keep a pumpkin for a few months in temperatures between 50 degrees and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. You also need to make sure that the jack-o-lantern pumpkins are stored in a location with low humidity. A basement can often be the best place to store your pumpkins until they are ready for carving.
