Frugal furniture: Refinish an exhausted tabletop with chalkboard paint

Parents of small children often find themselves in ownership of well-used and abused furniture.  However, with the financial crunch associated with raising up a child, parents find it very difficult to replace damaged furniture. Often-times parents do not want to even try to bring a nice piece of furniture into the home until all the inhabitants are old enough to respect and take care of it.  Instead of living with a eyesore or continually buying new pieces why not turn the old ugly furniture into funky kid-friendly furniture?

A chalkboard table is just such an example of creative refinishing.  To create this fun, family friendly and cost effective project you simply need three items:

Chalkboard paint

Sandpaper

Paintbrush

Gently sand away any remaining finish on your well-loved table-top.  Clean away the dust with a damp rag and you are ready to paint.  Be sure to stir the paint thoroughly before use.  One to 3 coats of paint should be sufficient to cover the tabletop and not leave any areas of thin paint.  Simply let the paint dry and viola—you will have your very own chalkboard table.  Now the kids can color to their hearts content (with chalk) and not worry one bit about messing up the table.  Mom and dad saved a couple hundred bucks and earned hours of great creative fun!
