Frugal Fun in Denver, August 27-28, 2011

The searing heat caused a short mental breakdown, which was the reason there was no column last week. I am recovering with air conditioning therapy along with an ice cream supplement. I am much better, thanks. This week, the week before Labor Day, still has some frugal fun going on. Don’t forget your sunblock.

Indulge your taste buds this weekend at the Chile Harvest Festival, held at the Lakewood Heritage Center(Wadsworth and Ohio), 801 S. Yarrow Street. There will be plenty of free parking available. The fest begins at 10am and runs until 5pm. This is a ticketed event, Adults are $5 and children ages 3 to 12 are $2. Proceeds from the event sponsor the Chicano Humanities and Arts Council, the folks responsible for the completion and dedication of the Art Mural Project (Cultural Perspectives) “LA Memoria de Neustra Tierra” at Denver International Airport created by artist Judith Baca.

The Chile Harvest Festival, a previous winner of Westword’s Best Festival Award, is a celebration of traditional Spanish Colonial and modern Spanish art stuffs, music, tummy-happy food and don’t forget the chiles! Over 65 artists, musicians, dancers and storytellers will be on hand to demonstrate both the traditional and contemporary. Don’t miss the Spanish Guitarists and Aztec dancers. Lots of cultural and art activities for the kids too like learning to make Chili Pepper Piñatas.

Driver’s Edge: Free- Life Saving Teen Driving Event

Suitable for those 21 and younger with driver’s licenses or permits

Cost: FREE

An independent nonprofit and public charity, the Driver’s Edge has one mission: saving lives behind the wheel. Bring your young driver to Coors Field for classroom education followed by behind the wheel experience. Exercises include skid control, panic breaking, distracted driving and more. This event is designed to change the behavior of young drivers. Registration is required.

MedMob, a movement that hopes thousands of people from over 130 cities around the world will meditate publicly in government buildings and college campuses. Be in front of the Tivoli Building at noon to participate. Meditators will experience deafening silence and inner calm. Meditation is scheduled for one hour. All experience levels, religious beliefs and philosophies are welcomed.
