Here in the south summer isn’t the only time of year it’s hot outside, in fact it’s hot pretty much year round. Ice cream and snowballs are a treat parents and their kids cool down with often, but within the last few years a new type of treat has become very popular, and the good news for parents is it’s HEALTHY.
Frozen yogurt shops have been around for a long time, but weren’t nearly as popular as they are now. Metairie used to be one of the homes to Zack’s frozen yogurt back in the 90’s. From Pinkberry on Magazine street, to Tutti Frutti on Jefferson Highway, and even Counter Culture all the way in Slidell there are many places to choose from next time your kid wants a sweet treat. Shops like Pinkberry and Counter Culture offer yogurt that have live cultures in it. Yep that’s right, live cultures just like the yogurt you would get from the grocery. The frozen yogurt comes in a variety of flavors, even chocolate, and a huge array of toppings is available to choose from. There is fresh fruit like ripe strawberries and juicy grapes to add even more nutrition to your dessert, or if you want to indulge a little toppings like chocolate chips and sprinkles are also available. Counter Culture also has more than just nutritional yogurt, they have a line of yogurt called Only 8 which is safe to be consumed by diabetics and those who are lactose intolerant. How cool is that?
Shops like Tutti Frutti, which has locations in Harahan, New Orleans, and Metairie offers yogurt where you can make it yourself. This is a fun experience to bring your kids to do. The yogurt cups are very wide and deep that way your child can have fun making their own creation without making too much of a mess. Other self-serve yogurt shops in the area are Cherry Berry in Metairie, right off of Causeway Boulevard, and Berry Tart in Slidell right off of Gause Boulevard.
There’s nothing like a sweet dessert that is actually healthy. The kids will love it and so will you.
