'Frozen' weathers arctic blast to top weekend box office

Disney’s ‘Frozen’ didn’t produce more chills than the arctic weather blasting the U.S., but it cooled off the competition at theaters and returned to the top of the domestic weekend box office, according to industry figures released Monday.

The animated 3D comedy adventure moved up one spot to No. 1 in its seventh weekend, earning $19.5 million for a total of $296.6 million since opening in limited release Nov. 22. ‘Frozen’ also finished first in its third weekend and has remained in the top three for the past six weekends.

Horror franchise entry ‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’ was the only new nationwide release on the first weekend of 2014 and opened at No. 2 with $18.3 million.

After three weekends at No. 1, fantasy sequel ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ fell to No. 3 in its fourth weekend, earning $15.6 million for a total of $229 million since opening Dec. 13.

Martin Scorsese drama ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio moved up one spot to No. 4 in its second weekend, earning $13.2 million for a for a total of $63.1 million since opening Christmas day.

Crime drama ‘American Hustle’ slipped one notch to No. 5 in its fourth weekend, earning $12.4 million for a total of $87.9 million since opening in limited release Dec. 13.
