On June 26, Walt Disney World Resort (WDW) announced a summer of “Frozen” fun for Disney’s Hollywood Studios. WDW has responded to continued interest in the hit animated movie by adding several “Frozen” experiences to the theme park, including a daily character processional, sing-alongs with Anna and Elsa, a “Frozen Funland” that includes an ice skating rink, a dance party and special fireworks.
“Frozen Summer Fun Live!” is loosely themed as Anna And Elsa’s goodwill visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios (DHS). Several citizens of Arendelle join the royal sisters in their visit. The “Frozen” summer fun runs from July 5 – Sept. 1.
Update: “Frozen Summer Fun LIVE!” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios has been extended through Sept. 28, 2014. A FastPass+ option now exists for the “Frozen” sing-along described below.
A look at the highlights of “Frozen Summer Fun Live” promises DHS will be one of the cool places to visit WDW this summer. Most experiences are available with theme-park admission.
Anna & Elsa’s Royal Welcome, the daily cavalcade, will take place at 11 a.m. The sister will arrive in a horse-drawn sleigh, traveling down Hollywood Boulevard. Kristoff will also appear as well as a fun flurry of Arendelle citizens dressed as skaters, skiers and ice cutters.
A stage show and sing-along takes place inside the park’s Premier Theater multiple times each day. “For The First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration” will offer a comedic retelling of Arendelle and its history. The show starring Queen Elsa, Princess Anna and their Royal Historians. The show, which includes projections, lighting and special effects, includes sing-along moment. At the each of each 20-minute performance, guests might have the opportunity to become “Honorary Citizens of Arendelle.”
Inside Soundstage One will be transformed into the park’s Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post & Frozen Funland, a wonderland that brings some wintery fun to the Orlando summer. The story behind this area is that Oaken, the movie’s trading post owner, and his cousins have built a temporary adventure park to enjoy a sudden snowstorm. This area will operate from regular park opening until 8 p.m.
Key elements to Oaken’s Frozen Funland will be an ice skating rink, with demonstrations by some of Oaken’s talented cousin, and artisan creating works based on “Frozen” characters. “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” area offers activities for children.
At Oaken’s Frozen Funland, guests will be able to go ice skating for an additional charge. Skating sessions are $10 for 30 minutes on the ice, a fee which includes the use of ice skates, socks and a helmet. Guests may also bring their own equipment. Oaken’s Frozen Funland will be open every day from park open to 8 p.m.
There are several restrictions of note for the ice-skating experience: Skating sessions are available on a first come, first serve basis and may be limited as to the sizing of skates. Waivers are required for all guests; minors must have an adult or responsible party, age 18 or older, present to sign for them.
Like many tourist areas, Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post & Frozen Funland also will offer guests the chance to get their picture taken – this time with films animated characters in a virtual setting. Guests may then email or share the photos through social media. Guests may also purchase merchandise, hot cocoa or and “Frozen”-inspired treats at Oaken’s Trading Post. And in a clever nod to both “Frozen” and the Orlando summer, guest leave Oaken’s through the door marked “Sauna.”
Olaf the Snowman loves the summer, but isn’t exactly built for the weather and doesn’t make a physical appearance during “Frozen Summer Fun Live!” Nonetheless, Olaf is part of the fun. He will appear on screen and also provide guests with audio updates of his adventures throughout the day. Guests can pick up their own “Take-Along Olaf" and take photos with it, sharing their joint adventures with the #OlafSummerVacation hashtag on social media.
Each night of “Frozen Summer Fun Live!” includes a dance party and special fireworks. The “Coolest Summer Ever” Dance Party takes place from 5:30 – 9: 30 p.m., featuring a live band playing a medley of music from the movie and rock-and-roll hits. Just before the fireworks, guests will see some of the “Take-Along Olaf” photos in a pre-fireworks show.
At 9:45 p.m., the “Frozen” Fireworks Spectacular starts. Set to the movie’s soundtrack, it features projections of snow and ice images and includes a “magical appearance” by Elsa that demonstrates her powers can produce icy blue and white fireworks. The spectacular includes appearances by Anna, Kristoff and Olaf. The special nighttime show is centered above the giant Sorcerer Mickey Hat on Hollywood Boulevard. (The “Frozen” Fireworks Spectacular will not take place Aug. 23, when Disney’s Hollywood Studios closes at 7 p.m. to host the Villains Unleashed hard-ticket event.
Worth noting: “Frozen Summer Fun Live!” experiences at Disney’s Hollywood Studios are not FastPass+ options. Also, it does not include a character meet-and-greet opportunities with Queen Elsa and Princess Anna; Anna and Elsa do meet with guests inside Princess Fairytale Hall at Magic Kingdom, and that experience is available as a FastPass+ option.
