Walt Disney Pictures' 3-D animated comedy film "Frozen" (which opened in the U.S. and Canada on Nov. 27, 2013) replaced Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" as the No. 1 box at the U.S./Canadian box office for the weekend ending Dec. 8, 2013. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on Dec. 8, the weekend tally for "Frozen" was $31.6 million, while "Catching Fire" (the weekend's No. 2 movie) had $27 million in ticket sales.

As previously reported, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" had the biggest opening weekend ($158.1 million) for a movie opening in November. In the U.S. and Canada, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" opened on Nov. 22, 2013, but there were also early screenings on Nov. 21, 2013.

The total box office for 2012's "The Hunger Games" was $408 million in the U.S. and Canada and $691 million worldwide. Ticket sales for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" outside the U.S. and Canada are about twice the amount of what "The Hunger Games" had, according to Box Office Mojo. By the time "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" ends its run in cinemas worldwide, the box office total for the movie could be $900 million to $1 billion.

Meanwhile, Relativity Media's "Out of the Furnace" (a crime drama starring Christian Bale, Casey Affleck and Woody Harrelson) got mixed-to-positive reviews from critics but flopped at the box office. "Out of the Furnace" opened in wide release in the U.S. and Canada on Dec. 6, 2013, and had only $5.3 million in ticket sales for its opening weekend, putting "Out of the Furnace" in a distant third place in the weekend's box-office rankings.

According to Box Office Mojo, here are the Top 5 movies in the U.S. and Canada for the weekend ending Dec. 8, 2013:

1. "Frozen" — $31.7 million

2. "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" — $26 million

3. "Out of the Furnace" — $5.3 million

4. "Thor: The Dark World" — $4.7 million

5. "Delivery Man" — $3.8 million

And here are the opening-weekend box-office numbers for the movies that opened in limited release on Dec. 6, 2013:

  • "Inside Llewyn Davis" — $100,250 from four theaters
  • "Twice Born" — $13,900 from 10 theaters
  • "Breakfast With Curtis" — $2,000 from one theater
