From world premieres to Rhea Perlman, cheers to Chicago theater this spring (Video)

“This spring will see a wealth of new theater on Chicago stages,” boasts Deb Clapp, Executive Director of the League of Chicago Theatres of “work that is guaranteed to be exciting, creative, and unique to this vibrant theater community. The plays we’ll see will range from world premieres to anniversary productions, family-friendly shows to hard-hitting dramas.”

Among the notable names making Chicago theaters their artistic home this spring are Rhea Perlman in Bruce Graham’s new play STELLA & LOU which premieres at Northlight Theatre from May 3 to June 9; and Neil LaBute as Profiles Theatre premieres the revised stage version of his IN THE COMPANY OF MEN from May 10 to June 30.

World premieres include Rajiv Joseph’s THE LAKE at Silk Road Rising from April 23 to May 26; Tarell Alvin McCraney’s drama HEAD OF PASSES at Steppenwolf through June 9; Jay Torrence’s Chicago story IVYWILD at The Hypocrites from April 30 to June 16, 2013; and THE HAPPIEST SONG PLAYS LAST at the Goodman Owen Theatre in association with Teatro Vista until May 12.

New works and adaptations include Steep Theatre’s US premiere of John Donnelly’s THE KNOWLEDGE from April 18 to May 25; TimeLine Theatre’s Chicago premiere of BLOOD AND GIFTS from May 9 to July 28; The Building Stage’s playful spin on the Miguel de Cervantes classic DAWN, QUIXOTE through April 27. In a production directed by Barbara Gaines, HENRY VIII receives its first production at Chicago Shakespeare Theater from April 30 to June 16.

Among the city’s featured musicals are Cy Coleman and Michael Stewart’s BARNUM which plays through June 16, 2013 at the Mercury Theater and the popular MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET which continues through September 2013 at the Apollo Theater.

“Having seen such critical and popular success at theaters throughout the city during the fall season, we are anticipating even greater triumphs of the stage this spring,” promises Clapp.
