- Bald Parrot Among New Species Discovered in the Amazon Basin ... Another fascinating article from Frank Indiviglio; who also reports,"And now for the bad news: A study by ornithologists from Birdlife International and Charles Darwin University has established that 279 bird species have become extinct over the past 500 years, with the rate of extinctions increasing in recent decades. Agricultural and mining expansion has replaced hunting and introduced species as the main cause of extinctions. Conservation efforts have turned the tide in some cases, but not to the degree that had been hoped…recovery goals set by the International Convention on Biological Diversity have, of necessity, been moved from 2010 to 2020."
-The Roaming Parrot is a new organization which purports to document and rate parrot rescues and pet stores across the country. And not everyone is happy about it. Right-To-Flight Elite Rehabilitative Exotic Bird Sanctuary says, " I don't particularly agree with those kinds of standards for an 'agency' that decides if all of the rescues/sanctuaries in the U.S. are 'reputable' and up to 'their' set standards. In one of their statements they say (paraphrased) 'If someone will not let us in to check them out it speaks volumes about how they operate.' I guess meaning that if a rescue/sanctuary will not allow them to come in and investigate then said rescue/sanctuary automatically gets a bad rating. For me and the permanent-resident sanctuary we operate, well, we are self-governed, we do not take donations, we are self-funded, we do not adopt out and in my opinion no one but the people that entrust us with their birds have any right to stick their nose in our business."
- Trivia time: From late 19th to the early 20th century, many Chinese to kept ceramic parrot tiles perched on their roofs. The more parrot tiles, the more important the resident. They were also placed on government buildings but no building could have more than nine. It was believed that parrots would bring a positive energy (chi) to the dwelling. In Chinese history in the art of feng shui, parrots were thought to be a source of opportunity bringing positive energy and keeping the negative away. -In lieu of natural sunlight, birds need full spectrum lighting to maintain proper nutrition and aid in the digestion of vitamins. Birds have a fourth cone in their eyes, enabling them to see ultraviolet colors, when provided full spectrum lighting. Sunlight and artificial sources of light are measured by color temperature and rendering. The sun at noon daylight is about 5500 degrees Kelvin (K). Natural light provides warmth and brings out color intensity that fluorescent lighting rarely mimics. Full Spectrum 15 Watt Spiral Compact Bulb emits the same color temperature as the sun at high noon.Natural daylight is also measured at a color rendering index (CRI) of 100, which shows the vibrance and intensity of colors in and around our environment. Full Spectrum Bulb have a CRI of 91, and will bring out colors in your bird's feathers that you may not have even known existed from fluorescent light. Other advantages: Prepares bird for seasonal changes, strengthens immune system, lowers obsessive/compulsive behavior frequencies, relieves psychological distress, mimics natural environment, maintains constant environmental temperature, aids visual acuity and increases the longevity of your feathered friend.
